Short answer: an Oriental or area rug is not just “a smaller carpet.” It’s a woven textile usually wool, silk, or a wool-silk blend that’s built by hand or on a loom, has natural dyes that can bleed, fringe that needs special care, and often isn’t even attached to your floor.
Wall-to-wall carpet is glued or tacked down, made from synthetic fibers like nylon or polyester, and cleaned in place with a truck-mounted steam machine. Clean a $3,000 Persian rug the same way you clean your hallway carpet, and you risk shrinking it, bleeding the colors into each other, or rotting the foundation from the inside out. That’s the whole difference in one sentence, and it’s why we clean rugs completely differently than we clean wall-to-wall carpet.
I get this question almost every week from homeowners in Hoboken and across North Jersey who just booked a routine carpet cleaning and then ask, “can you do the same thing to my grandmother’s Persian rug in the living room?” My answer is always the same: no, and here’s why you don’t want me to.

Why You Can’t Steam Clean a Persian Rug Like a Carpet
Here’s the part most people don’t know until it’s too late. Steam cleaning works great on wall-to-wall carpet because the fibers are synthetic, the carpet is stretched tight over a pad, and the water has nowhere to go but back up into the machine.
An oriental rug or area rug doesn’t have that setup. There’s no pad locking it in place, the foundation underneath (usually cotton) soaks up water like a sponge, and if that moisture doesn’t dry out fast and evenly, you get mildew, a musty smell, and sometimes the whole rug delaminates from the backing.
On top of that, wool and silk fibers react to heat and pH completely differently than nylon does. Hit a silk rug with the wrong chemical or too much heat and you’ll watch the sheen disappear permanently. Hit a wool rug with too much agitation and the fibers felt together, and there’s no undoing that.
That’s why every rug that comes through our shop gets pulled off the floor first. We inspect the dye stability, the fringe condition, and the foundation before a single drop of water touches it. Then it’s dusted to remove the dry soil sitting deep in the weave this step alone removes more dirt than most people expect, since a rug can hold up to a pound of soil per square yard washed by hand or by controlled immersion depending on the fiber, rinsed, and dried flat or on a rack so it doesn’t stretch out of shape.
What This Means If You Have Both
